Using Genetic Resource Data for Breeding: The G2P-SOL Advanced Training School

On April 30 & May 01, 2019, the Wageningen University and Research (WUR-DLO) organised the 1st G2P-SOL advanced training school on the use of genetic resource data for breeding.

25 participants, including vegetable breeders and PhD/Postdoc researchers from various countries, attended the training to learn more on how to explore and use biodiversity maintained in the genebank collections for breeding improved vegetable cultivars. The participants had also the opportunity to interact with their peers from other companies and institutions and to strengthen their professional networks.

Internationally well-known speakers were invited to train and inform the participants about key topics spanning from the presentation of the genetic diversity in genebanks to the G2P-SOL infrastructures. Showcases on how the Breeding API can be used by end-users added a practical dimension to the lessons learned in the previous sessions.

"Attending this training school and meet renowned researchers in plant breeding has been source of a great motivation to continue learning more about plant genetic diversity." stated David Alonso Martín, Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), PhD Student and participant of the G2P-SOL school. "Great efforts have been made to implement new sequencing technologies such as SPET (Single Primer Enrichment Technology) or phenotyping which are changing the way of gathering and analysing data to optimise the process of genetic improvement and conservation of plant genetic resources in the germplasm banks which can help to face the new challenges of the future such as climate change and food security."

In the future, the G2P-SOL project will organise the 2nd entry level training school and the 2nd advanced training school. Stay tuned!
